Closing of the Bones Ceremony
Celebrate and honour your body, motherhood, and pregnancy journey with a Closing of the Bones Ceremony.
The Closing of the Bones ceremony is an ancient postpartum ritual that honours the physical, emotional, and spiritual transformation of childbirth.
This tradition has deep roots in Indigenous cultures, particularly those of Central and South America, where it symbolises a birthing person’s journey of closing, healing, and rebalancing after giving birth.
In these traditions, childbirth was seen as an “opening” of the body, spirit, and energy field, which requires intentional closure to restore harmony
Closing of the Bones
A Closing of the Bones ceremony is a sacred, nurturing postpartum ritual designed to support the birthing person’s physical, emotional, and spiritual recovery after childbirth.
While practices can vary depending on the cultural or personal preferences of the practitioner, the ceremony generally includes the following key elements:
- Setting the scene -
Create a safe, calming, and sacred space by burning candles or incorporating soothing elements such as soft music or essential oils to foster relaxation
- Rebozo Wrapping -
A rebozo, a traditional woven shawl is used to gently rock, wrap, and hold different parts of the birthing person’s body, particularly the pelvis, abdomen, and shoulders. This process symbolises the closing of the body, both physically and energetically, helping to restore balance and promote healing.
- Massage and Bodywork -
Enjoy the relaxation techniques of massage to feel grounded and supported while easing tension, relieving stress, and realigning the body after pregnancy and birth.
- Sound Healing -
Incorporating sound, such as the rhythmic use of a drum, singing bowl, or chimes, is often part of the ceremony. These sounds produce vibrations that can help release emotional tension, calm the mind, and promote a sense of peace and connection.
- Reflection and Ritual -
The ceremony may involve guided meditation or intentional reflections, allowing the birthing person to process their birth experience and transition into their new role
Each Closing of the Bones ceremony is highly personalised, honouring the unique needs and journey of the birthing person while drawing from the wisdom of traditional postpartum care.
